Dear CBSB, I know this is terribly belated, but I think that I should thank and address certain groups in particular, and in detail, after our highly successful Metier VIII Concert! Sec 1s: If any of you are reading this, GREAT! It means that you show interest in the band’s activities, and you are starting to care about what goes in within the band. As I said at the very beginning of the year, the band is a special place, and it takes more out of you than you can imagine. However, what it gives back to you is far greater! Friends, life lessons, and a growing love for music of all genres! I hope that all of you will come to love being in the band as much as your seniors, and that all of you do not let discouragement fill you. You’ve barely learnt playing your instrument for half a year, very soon, you will be very good at it! Sec 2s: Wow it has been a long 1.5 years, hasn’t it?! This is where you’ve come in just such a short time, and I have to say that I am extremely proud of your progress! For some of you, things may seem very difficult at times, and I am sure that some of you may have considered quitting. I say, do not! Not only will you miss out on a great future, you are throwing away so much that you have already achieved! ALL of you are awesome, not a single one of you are fallen below my expectations! We still have a long, fruitful and exciting journey ahead of us! Sec 3s: Seniors, you have come a long way! You’ve experienced both Indoor and Outdoor SYF, and you all have experienced the thrill, the exhilaration and also the disappointments! You are the most experienced of all our members, and it is in you that our younger musicians will look up to and follow! Set a fantastic example for them to follow. Believe it or not, they will follow, no matter how much it seems otherwise. The future of the band is in your hands! Section Leaders: Thank you for the work you have done in handling your sections! I now present a new challenge for you. How much further can you bring the standard of your section up? Not only are you a leader in terms of skills in playing, you also have to be a leader in terms of morale and spirits! It is now up to you to bring your section up, and to make sure that each and every single section-mate is running the race alongside, and not behind! Show me what you’ve got! Executive Committee 10/11: Just as the SLs are the leaders and representations of their sections, you all are the leaders and representations of the band. Whatever you do, no matter how small, they will be followed and mimicked by the band. Your personalities and characters will mould the band, and they will somehow follow in your example, even if they disagree with it somewhat. Do your best to work together, and cultivate a great love for music making among all of your band-mates! Sec 4s: I can’t begin to express my gratitude for how much you all have put into the band. I know this year has been a year of sacrifices for all of you. First, it was SYF, and then it was Metier VIII. All at the same time, you all had to deal with exams, extra lessons and prelims! I don’t remember having such a busy sec 4 life myself! Kudos to you all, and congratulations on being able to handle such a tight schedule, and yet pulling it off in the end! I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences with all of you, and I will remember it forever. I have one request though. In your free time after your exams, PLEASE come back to visit; share your experience, knowledge, and skills with us. You have travelled a great distance with the band, and it is only natural to want to make sure that your successors can do the same, if not more! You are all welcome to join us for practices, and to add to the CBSB sound! Executive Committee 09/10: You have been a wonderful committee to work with, and all of you are extremely pleasant and amicable! I have never received complaints, seen any disgruntlement, and I all of you can get the job done. In your one year as leaders, I’m sure you’ve learnt many lessons. Bring these lessons with you all your life, and never forgot them! Share them with those around you, and help to make the lives of your friends and family better! All the best for your future! Everyone: As I’ve said before, Metier VIII was a thoroughly enjoying, awesomely fun experience for me! I’d just like all of you think spare a moment, and think back upon the past. Remember how the band could not handle more difficult songs, and remember how you would all struggle with even the simplest passages. Now, look at where you are now. You managed to prepare for a very successful concert in a short two months! Further, within these two months, all of you had so many other things to do, what with exams, growth camp, enrichment lessons and classes! Just remember this retrospective thought, and put all your energy into the future! Think: In just 9 more months, SYF 2011 will be upon you! Can you repeat this feat of miracle that you have achieved? I challenge all of you to not only repeat it, but double it, triple it, and push your boundaries beyond what you can imagine! Why is this so important? Not because we want to get a better medal at SYF. It is really because band has become a part of your life that cannot be removed. It is a part of your body, that when cut off, will cause great pain! It is a part of your body, you have to tend to it every single day, so that it does not rot and fall off or get infected. It is a part of your body, so you need to nurture it, defend it, and improve it and most of all: love it! - Mr. Wong |
