CBSB, You have all done an exemplary job, and put up an excellent performance during the SYF Marching Assessment. I have spoken to many of my friends who have been in the display band scene for a long time, and they felt that you have all done very well. The band was precise and sharp, the dressing was accurate and the movements were faultless. Unfortunately, the judges did not award high points for this, and placed quite a lot of emphasis on showmanship and crowd pleasing ability. While it is true that our fan gimmick was quite interesting, it was not enough to impress. The same can be said for some of the other bands as well. You’ve seen how impressive XYZ Band (you know which) was, but yet it was not good enough for Gold with Honours in the eyes and ears of the judges. They too, were extremely precise, accurate and sharp, but the honours bands bested them in terms of showy-ness and big booms and bangs and flourishes. XYZ Band was also very balanced in terms of music, where many other bands really did not do as well in that aspect. As you can see, it is not that you did not do well, it is that we gave them apples when what they really wanted was KFC chicken. It is not because you did not work hard enough, and it is not because you don’t deserve a distinction. If you look up the meaning of distinction in the dictionary, it does not mean “best”; it means that you were very different from the rest. In my opinion, you all were. You all were different, because you all started from nothing. You all were special, because none of you had display/marching band training. You all were distinctive, because you all managed to make something out of nothing! I apologise that I could not be with you all during the results ceremony, as the officials did not allow us to go down so easily. I had to run around Indoor Stadium in circles trying to find all of you after it was over, amongst the other bands who were blocking the corridors. Thankfully, Mr. Chiang found you all more quickly than I did. As you may already know, I was too upset to say much to you all also. However, ALL of you, regardless of the mistakes that you could have made during the performance, have made me extremely, extremely proud. Every single person, in the formation, at the pit, helpers, supporters, alumni, and teachers, have played an integral part in ensuring that this experience was fruitful for everyone. As your trainer and instructor, I would NOT change any part of the experience, even if I were given a chance to magically go back in time. Because of this experience, CBSB is now a band of brothers and sisters, united and strong! Where you all used to be disorganised and disinterested, you are now a team of go-getters, high in spirits and morale, saturated with the love and friendship of your comrades, and hardened like tempered steel from the gruelling training and endurance that you have undergone! So, do not look back and think that it was all futile and useless. Anybody who does that is a fool, like someone who does not pick up $10 on the ground, because it was not $50. In this period of time, work hard on your upcoming exams, and USE the lessons learnt in your training as a guide on how to study for your exams. Study smart, and cover all areas, so that there is NO CHANCE for you to do badly, exactly like how precise with details we had to be in training. Strive on, even when it gets tiresome and long, and you will see how far long you have come, just like the display! Even if you have started with nothing, you CAN get somewhere, you just need a lot of patience, endurance, and effort! Most of all, you need to believe in yourself, only then will you be able to pull off the miracle that you all have achieved! Do the best for your exams, all of you! Show your parents and teachers that music training makes you a far better person! Promise me this, and promise yourself as well! - Mr. Wong
Hey juniors, well done for the display. You guys are really good, for first timers. I doubt i can't even do that. I know some of you guys are quite upset that you all got merit, thinking that some of us cause the band to get that merit and and other stuff, its really not your fault. You guys really did a good job I hope you all can be proud of yourself, merit can means a lot of things. Merit can means good but can be better, or another form to teach you all to be humble. Its the way you think about it. At least you all march together and clement didn't drop the mace, right?
I believe you guys had fun and enjoyed the times you all shared tgt. I know some of you think otherwise of your 'seniors'like abandon etc, hey peeps, we know that you need them at a certain point of time. But sometimes its the situations that do not allow them to be at your side, no matter what you cannot blame your instructors. They are the ones who plan this organise and make this successful! :) So i hope you all can send a thankyou for them when you sees/reads this. We always have to think the best of people and not otherwise. If I'm not wrong, band step down alr right, nonetheless, give a pat on the shoulders/hug your fellow bandmates with you see them and say: "goodjob, thankyou!" Okayyyyyy?
Love, angie
It was really a good job done despite the results, considering that this is our 1st time and we never had much of a marching culture before. With this experience, I'll make sure the next round will definitely be better ;)
-Mr. Chiang
